Cameron Randall (he/him) is a freelance bass trombonist and educator based in Chicago. Hailed for his versatility and skills as a doubler, Cameron has discovered a passion for many styles and mediums of music including orchestral and operatic music in particular. Cameron’s performing career has taken him all across the Midwest, having performed with the Evanston Symphony, Ashland Symphony, Perrysburg Symphony, Oberlin Orchestra, and Oberlin Opera Orchestra, among others on tenor, bass, and contrabass trombones, tuba, euphonium, and bass trumpet. Recent summers have included attendance at the Pokorny Seminar (2020-21) in DeKalb, IL, virtual Body Mind Spirit Workshop (2021), and Mostly Modern Festival (2022) in Saratoga Springs, NY where he was a Low Brass Fellow. In the summer of 2022, he was invited to join Oberlin Conservatory alumni in a special 50th anniversary performance of Mozart’s Requiem honoring victims of the 1972 Kent State Shooting.


New music continues to play a prominent role in Cameron’s career. In recent months, he has been involved in premieres of Robert Paterson’s Slightly Comic Overture (2022) and Michael Rosin’s Stellarium (2022) for orchestra, and Cait Boblitt’s with the wind. (2022) for tuba quartet and Hearts that come (2021) for solo bass trombone. His new music journey also led him to the TIMARA program at Oberlin, where he did coursework in electroacoustic composition and recording technologies.


As a multifaceted musician, Cameron has also performed in various commercial settings including professional productions of Cabaret and Urinetown. He is also a true believer in the marching arts having participated, taught, and designed shows at various levels in the activity including Drum Corps International and Bands of America.


Cameron is currently pursuing a Masters in Music Performance from DePaul University where he studies with Charlie Vernon and Mark Fisher on trombone, and Scott Tegge on tuba. He recently completed a B.M. from the Oberlin Conservatory with John Gruber. Other teachers include Gretchen McNamara, Lee Allen, Jay Ashby, Bryant Smith, Michael Smith, and Gary White. He has recently performed in masterclasses for Gram Lee, Gretchen McNamara, Ava Ordman, Gabe Rice, Matthew Guilford, and David Vining.


A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Cameron values home and his family above all else in life. He currently resides in Roscoe Village with his partner, Cait and two cats, Rory and Percy. In his spare time he enjoys instrument repair, golf, disc golf, and cheering on his fellow Demons. He’s recently considered taking up lockpicking after watching some cool videos on TikTok.
